What can you guys tell me/ recommend? Thanks

I can talk in general about the Mares Mr-12 (I own and service 4 of them); it is a "workhorse" 1st stage, and very well-established design (the MR-12 has been around a long time), and is a good regulator. I believe the Prestige is Mares' mid-range regulator now. I'm not sure, but believe it may have replaced the plastic Proton. Overall, it would be a good, solid performing, mid-range regulator set...

But for the price, I'd take a very long look at the Edge. The Edge is made by ODS, a large Taiwanese company that makes regs for a number of brands.... I like the fact that you can buy rebuild kits for it online.

Although I'm a Mares fan, I'd probably buy the Edge based on "bang for the buck".

Have fun with whatever you decide.

Best wishes.

That Mares regulator is on sale. Several internet stores have it at less than $200. It is a real good reg and worth getting at that price.

Thanks, I'm curious about why you say Edge because of "bang for the buck?" With mares sales right now, the reg and octo will run about the same -Edge a bit less. Are there edge features (other than the rebuild) which I should consider?

Hi jabbok,

Actually, I had not realized the Mares was on sale, until I saw the link Stu S. posted.... so now I'm not as certain :D

I love our Mares regs. We have:

2 MR-22 Abyss, 3 MR-12 Proton, and 1 Mares MR-12 Voltrex.

The Mares regs have balanced diaphragm 1st stages, and unbalanced "classic downstream" 2nd stages. They are simple, reliable, easy to service, and perform very well.

A lot depends on where you plan to have your regulator serviced. Any decent reg technician should be able to service either of these regulators easily, as long as the parts can be obtained.

Will you be taking the regulators to a local shop for service, or mailing them away for service? That might be something to consider. If you plan to mail the reg off, then your choices are unlimited, if you plan to have the reg serviced locally, then your choice may be limited to the brand(s) that the local shop is willing to service.

Best wishes.

Thanks Leadturn,
I suspect I'll be going with the Mares. Our primary dive location will be Roatan, Honduras and I know there's a dealer.
