Been using one for quite some time. Mostly warm water, you must get it modified to cold water diving. Did have a slight free-flow problem (little bubbles, no high flow) with the octo last weekend, but a field adjustment fixed that problem. Good value for the money.

My husband has one. Very easy breather. Had a freeflow problems at the surface - just needed some fine tuning from the shop.
I say go for it, just give a test run to check for the freeflow problems before you find yourself on a boat far away from a shop.

I think its a great regulator for the money.

I have the MR12 Axis and my friend has the Axis Octo - and we both have been pleased with its use. Haven't hand ANY problems with ours. It breathes well, seems easy to get air and works in any position we've tried.

The 1st stage has a nice looking chrome finish and the 2nd stages are free from venturi adjustments and knobs, which this reg does very well without. For the money, its not a bad reg at all.

I've done about 40 dives with my Axis reg over the last couple of months and I've been very happy. I have had to have both the primary and octo tuned due to slight free flowing, but I guess that is not unusual with new Mares regs. I've used mine in temps from low 40's to high 60's and at depths up to 80 fsw and have always found it to be an easy breathing reg. I was talking with another diver at my LDS the other day who was telling me that he and his wife have been diving with their Axis regs in cold water without the cold water kit and have yet to have a freezing problem.

For recreational diving I'd recommend them to anyone.

Steve.

I own a Mares Axis Octo, and its OK....but honestly, I wouldn't put it in the same league as the Scubapro or Apeks. You wouldn't catch me diving the Doria with a Mares...I believe that Mares is a ski manufacturer and scuba gear is just an offshoot of this line.

I think I have to agree.
