Hi all,

I am hoping that someone will be able to tell me why Mares have a Salt or Fresh water setting on their MC2 (or M2) dive computer?

What effect does it have if the DC is set to FRESH and you dive in the ocean?

TIA.

Hi TIA, here goes a try (others, please correct me if I'm wrong). Computers measure ambient pressure to gauge depth and give you a reading. Saltwater is more dense than freshwater and for a given depth will exert more pressure than the same depth in freshwater. So basically, there are two different modes to take this into account to assure maximum precision of your depth sensor on your computer! In other words, at a given depth if your computer is set to fresh, and you are in salt water, your computer will be indicating you are a bit deeper than you really are. These measures are important for the computer calculations, so to be precise, you need to set the computer according to your use: Fresh vs Salt.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the answer!! I hadn't considered the density issue at all.

You're welcome ROB... I keep forgetting that TIA is thanks in advance, rather than a signature...:dork2::dork2::dork2::dork2::shakehead::shakehead:

Cheers!

Just received an M2 for Christmas and I'm having trouble literally turning the unit on. I've correctly installed the batteries and despite having tried different push sequences for the each or both of the 2 buttons, I still can't turn it on............

What am I doing wrong. Any help to this techno-boob would be welcome.

When you install a battery in your M2 Computer the back light should go on for a couple of seconds with a count down. Then computer should go off. In order to turn it on again you should press a button. Sometimes people don't press the button hard enough. Try to press it harder and if it doesn't work bring it back to the diveshop for replacement. Let me know if it worked.
Cheers
