Hello,

I'm a newbie to scuba diving and i'm about to be purchasing some equipment. I noticed the mares hub, but I haven't been able to find any reviews or opinions on it. Should I or shouldn't I??

Shouldnt.

The golden rule in diving is KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid. There is nothing simple about the HUB. Its a classic case of overthinking.
Sorry I cant elaborate more at this time as I am pushed for time. I promise to give some good reasons tomorrow
Regards
Azza

The general thinking about the HUB is that it's not fit for purpose.

In order to get all the hoses tucked away they've created a rat's nest of connectors in the hoses. There are several single points of failure that could potentially lead to a simultaneous failure of both of your 2nd stages and your BCD. Needless to say any bit of diving gear that could fail like that is something to be avoided.

And that's the the tip of the iceberg in terms of teh criticisms you'll hear about the HUB.

Hi there Rogerm -

The hub is a popular object of derision for some members of the board. Others, who own one, don't seem to mind diving with them:

This thread on the HUB ran from March 2001 to October 2004 and you will find its 340 posts discuss the matter in some depth. Note that the search function does not work for three letter words, so add a wildcard, ie 'mares hub*'.

Cheers,
Rohan,

Slight sidetrack but NICE TRICK with the wildcard. The four letter search limit has been driving me crazy!

BTW - IMHO - The Hub is a very bad way to go - simplicity is the key. It is not even streamlined. Look at a classic back inflate BC like the Balance or go straight for a BP wing and save the intermediate 'upgrading' expense.

totally agree

I think the HUB would be real test of courage!
The last time I looked at it they were pushing the Pneumatic tank strap!
If I understand it correctly you could have a single point of failure that could cause both primary and secondary regs fail plus the BCD fail, wouldn't the pneumatic tank strap fail also?
That would really suck to loose all air, sink, and have your tank fall off.

Welcome to the Scubaboard and diving! We all love to talk about it. :eyebrow:

Please don't buy this gear. If for no other reason than the ones already listed, you'll regret it. I understand why you might think the concept is cool but as soon as you see the other gear out there and start educating yourself on all the different types of gear, I'm sure you'll see the disadvantages far out weigh the advantages. This is only my opinion but please consider others first.

At any rate, I hope you enjoy the boards!
