I can't speak for the Mares Abyss, but I definately wasn't pleased with my Mares Axis regs. I've heard some other complaints about other Mares regs as well. The Apeks is a really solid reg that you can't go wrong with.

What, in your eyes, are the benefits to the Abyss that has you interested?

i have absolutely no idea, im actually asking advice. ive been told be few that both are good regulators and there are so many types that i really dont know what to choose. It is a little hard trying them.... thought i could get a little help...

I can't give personal experience for either reg, but the only feature difference I see (looking at manufacturer web sites) is that the Apeks has a Venturi adjustment to prevent free flowing at the surface. Mares uses what they call Vortex Assist Design rather than venturi adjustments to provide breathing performance at depth. I know several people who own the Abyss and they are happy with it. Myself I own a Mares Axis and I've had no troubles with it so far.

Myself, I would go with an Abyss, but that's mostly because Apeks aren't available in my area (as far as I know) and therefore no one services them.

Steve.

looks like the most of u would change apeks for anything. i dont think all of you could go wrong...

Mares Abyss $243.00
Apeks ATX200 $379.00 (got mine for $330.00)

The price on the Mares.... is WAY tempting right now....

Seems either folks love the Mares or hate it. Good thread... anxious to see replies myself.

Hi,

I am using Abyss and Axis as oct. Not sure if it is single case. My Abyss generates noise at breathing like wheezing. And it is easily free-flowing at surface, extremely sensitive. About Axis, I got to fix it in dive shop as it leaked seriously after 30 dives. Finally dive shop adjusted the sensitivity of Abyss too. They are now fine. But this was not what I expected from Mares.

Beside, I feel tired to bite Abyss, it's quite heavy. Dont know it is the same as for Apeks reg. But if I have second chance, I may go for Apeks or Scubapro. Good luck.

NB I use them very gentle and problem should not be due to abuse.

I went with the ATX 200 on the recommendation of my LDS. I am taking it to Barbados next weekend. I will post back how it goes :)
