Apart from weight, is there any other differences between the Mares 22 Abyss
& the 42 Abyss?

i think the only differance is the mr22 has one 1/2" primary lp port and 3 3/8" lp ports and the mr42 has 4 3/8" lp ports aside from that i think they are the same

Thanks for the info.

Does that make any difference in breath-ability or performance?

Correct in the LP differences. Also, the 22 uses the standard HP poppet assembly that is used in the following models: 12, 16, 22, and 32. The 42 uses HP poppet parts that are unique to that particular model.

You would not be able to detect a difference in the breathing performance.

is that true with the mr22t as well

Yes, with the exception of the V/MR42 series, the tri-material HP poppets fit all of the diaphragm regulators. The V42 used a SCS (Spherical Core Seal) system, while the MR42 uses the tri-material valve. It is a smaller sized version of the unit used in the other models. The internal dimensions of the 42 are too small to use the standard sized components. A V42 cannot be converted to use the MR mechanism. All of the other first stages originally using the SCS can be converted over to the tri-material.

I own an original V42 with Proton Metal second stages. It is my preferred cold water reg for when I am diving with a single tank.

i am diving a mr42t with the carbon wife has the mr42 on a proton she dives had them in 43 f this weekend no problems. mine is getting CWD kit as we type

Is the weight of the Abyss 42 second stage less than the 22? If so, will this contribute to less jaw fatigue, or is the difference so minuscule that it does not matter?

They share the same 2nd stage (Abyss is the name of the 2nd stage; MR22, MR42, etc., refers to first stage).

The Abyss 2nd stage is quite light, especially for a metal 2nd stage.

In the water, it is even lighter: It is full of air :D

Jaw fatigue, if present, is mostly caused by hose length, flexibility and routing, and mouthpeice selection (for most 2nd stages). If you have the hose routed poorly, the 2nd stage will "pull", and a mouthpiece that doesn't "fit" your mouth comfortably will also cause fatigue.

Best wishes.

if you are getting a new abyss unless its old stock it will come with a super flex(miflex) hose. they will help the jaw.
