I searched and could not find a thread on this, although I'm sure it has been discussed and someone will post the link in a diplomatic way.:)

I recently came back from a trip and also did some reflecting on recent trips. I have always enjoyed dives led by females vs male guides.

My observations

Female guides go slower - its a more relaxed dive and allows more time for close observation and photos

Male guides go fast - as in a race to see whats up ahead as if we are going to miss something.

This was the case last week in the cenotes - two dive guides - our dive lasted at least 5 minutes longer on each dive with the female guide.

Is this anyones else's experience?

I’ve noticed the same thing. For me, most of the time I have a video camera in hand and go so slow I think I need a yellow triangle on the bottom of my tank or a sign that warns, “This diver makes frequent stops, pass with caution.”

My solution is to tell the guide well in advance and let them know what I’m doing. Most of the time, shortly after splashing in I never see the guide until I’m back in the boat.

I've never really stopped to think about this before, but now that I am, I have never had a female guide.I will have to wait until I do have a female guide and see if I notice any differences from a male.

I know what you mean and think your right.

BUT
our dive lasted at least 5 minutes longer on each dive with the female guide.

What's 5 min ?

When I would take you, and most other new divers on a tour, you'll be down for 45-55min.
When my wife takes you, you'll be down for atleast 80-85min.:D

btw.she keeps OW students down for 60min.:rofl3:

Your right, 5 min is not much - but that was just a reference to the latest set of dives in the cenotes - both groups descended at the same time and the other group was already walking up the path to get fresh tanks when we were just breaching the surface...

Like most stereotypes, there's a bit of truth in your observations of male and female dive guides.

I've also noticed that inexperienced guides are faster than experienced ones; and that youngsters are faster than older guides.

Indeed, my favorite DM is a very experienced, not-very-young, woman that runs a dive op in Maui. :D

With my limited experience all of my male guides have been young ( not sure about experience) and my only dives with an older male dm was shore dives in Curacao and he actually followed me at my own pace...

My favorite guide as well is a 50ish retiree enjoying her extra income job

I've had only 1 female DM. And you are right... No zipping around like a race kart.

It can be distracting though, if your female diver is curvatious... You tend to burn up air faster, I think.
