I am surprised it stayed up as long as it did. Islam has long seen depictions of human beings as idolatrous; traditional Islamic art consists of intricate geometric patterns, calligraphy, and stylized vegetative motifs.

As indicated in the article, it was widely seen as a somewhat desperate attempt by former President Abdulla Yameen to hold on to power by trying to gain the populist Islamic vote in the recent election.
