i have a 2 week break in feb - planning to dive the maldives. However i'm keen only on the big fishes (mantas, whale sharks etc)

1) is feb diving in maldives a good time for this ?

2)if yes- where are the best sites to catch these wonderful creatures ?

3) i read that night diving is not popular in maldives - anyone knows the reason ?

for what its worth - i'm planning a 2 week liveaboard !

Thanks !

I'm sitting at CDG, Paris right now waiting for my plane to the Maldives (Club Med). When I return next week, I'll let you know what I find out about the diving :-)

dear sir,
i spent the last two weeks of oct 03 on a liveaboard in the maldives
her web site is:
http://www.sultansoftheseas.it/en/infoSMadivaru.php
i had a fantastic great time
she is in the hoovadoo (sp?) atoll
we saw lots of what you refer as big fish
white and grey tip sharks, manta, sting, torpedo and eagle rays
lots of big turtles
the crew was very accomidating and the food was very good
the m/v is very spacious and comes with a seperate 65' dive boat
i highly recommend her to anyone who wants to do a liveaboard
sorry for the bad spelling
regards,
smokey

If you're in the Asia Pac region try getting hold of this month's Asian Diver as it has a 36 page supplement on the Maldives http://www.asiandiver.com/

I've dived at Ari Attol in February. Great diving and plenty of big stuff to view - incl mantas. Current was very strong though. :)

Manta point should be in full swing in the South Ari Atoll in Feb. maybe a chance of whale sharks although 3 months later would be better (saw 12 in 6 dives last May). Good affordable accoms at White Sands Resort and a great dive school. I would assume that a liveaboard would take you down to this area as well.

Check out www.euro-divers.com at white sands, maybe email the dive school direct. They will be able to tell you what to expect. They also keep a record of whale shark sighting so might be able to tell you your chances of a whale shark in Feb, of course as always no promises.
