Unfortunately I have to disagree. I was at Maldives in spring 2018, making 10 dives for scientific purposes (testing novel audio/video UW recording systems).A mediocre dive in the Maldives still probably beats a great one in the Bahamas.
Most dives were awful: the coral is bleached everywhere, Maldivians throw a lot of garbage off their reefs, there was no big fish, and the small ones are scarce and with washed colours.
I was told that coral survived only in a handful of spots, and that only with a liveaboard with proper staff you can have the chance to make some dives which are still memorable...
The contrast from my memory dating back to 1989 was striking.
At that time, you could choose any reef you wanted, it was fantastic everywhere...
