Hi,

I was planning a dive trip to the Maldives when the tsunami happened. I'm still looking forward to go there but I've got no information about the current diving conditions. Does anyone have been diving in the Maldives after the tsunami? How badly is marine life, reefs, corals affected?

Best regards,

Just read a brief report from someone just back from the Maldives. Only a few islands are still out of commision and most of these will be open again soon.

With regards to the marine life it is as good as ever and has not been affected by the tsunami to any great degree.

A report will be available on my website in the next week or so. For now you can see some of it here:

If you are going to be on a LOB (which I highly recommend anyway), you will not really notice any difference. If you are staying at a resort, you may want to get a report from someone that stayed near the same part of the atoll that your resort is on. If you are going to have to travel several hours every day to get to decent diving, you may not enjoy yourself much.

I just came back from a one week live-aboard in Male & Ari Atoll - Big fish were plenty (sharks, mantas, Napoleon...); very good diving indeed - If you are interested in the details I can post a trip report.

Just so you know, PADI have created a page where you can find out the latest updates on your SE Asia travel plans:

http://www.padi.com/english/ap/news/011305-Tsunami_Update/default.asp

You can type in our destination, and they will give you information on how things are over there. I know it is not quite the same as chatting to someone who has just been over there, but hope it helps out a touch.

Have a great trip.
