Hi Dave,

I can make this reeeaaallllyy easy for you.....just sign everything over to me and I will make sure it gets put to great use ;-)!

your pal,

Find an ocean conservation group consistent with conservative values, because the money will be more effective.

I have been involved with some groups that had too many parasites taking big fat salaries and begging for 100 checks from the little guys so they could have a Beverly Hills address and the trendy environmental image and tax breaks.

I like the Nature Conservancy, even though they have their share of socialists.

You know, there are organizations like Mote which have different operations under their overall name. For instance, the shark research facility recieves its own donations, as does the animal rehab, etc.. or you can donate to Mote as a whole and let them distribute.

Catherine & Collin. I must admit I don't know the organizations that have big fat salary's and I don't want to donate to them, hence the thread. However I do want one that is active like stopping shark finning as opposed to just research.

Paul I expected something like that from Scott, hear was I thinking you were a honest upstanding gentleman :rofl3: .

Nature Conservancy is one of the best, they actually put the money to good use. Their main means of conservation is buying up land that needs to be conserved as opposed to just try to get people to donate land or try to pressure the govt to do something (although they do use those means as well).

They are currently doing work in the carib: The Nature Conservancy in the Caribbean - Caribbean Nature - Caribbean Environment - Caribbean Conservation - The Nature Conservancy

Otherwise, perhaps look for an organization that is specifically doing something that you support. The more focused the org, the more likely your donation will do what you want, and sometimes the more tightly focused orgs seem to get more done. All the wood behind one arrow, as it were.

Ah, Dave why would you want to give to an organization with a hugh bureaucracy when you can gave to my favorite small charity which is well, ME! ;-) You know you want to!

My impression of Nature Conservancy has been that they are one of those organizations that spends too much money on salaries and upscale office space, but I haven't paid much attention to them recently, and my impressions may be out of date. Based on information that's now a few years old, they sometimes make tradeoffs, like agreeing to let one piece of wilderness be developed in exchange for protection for another, and their decisions may or may not agree with what their donors would have wanted.

I donate to Natural Resources Defense Council because they are active in making sure that laws regarding environmental protections are actually enforced. But the OP seemed interested in supporting marine conservation in particular, rather than environmental conservation in general. I know some people who might have some good ideas.... I'll ask them for some suggestions and report back....
