okay, one more small favor... ebay auction 200507335414 ... it appears to be a 60 mm AF-S lens (remanufactured although as little as I will use it - does not bother me)... although there is the dreaded "D" in the name... so, you guys tell me... is this THE ONE I am looking for??? The price looks right...

thanks

D all by itself means "distance" -- it sends to focusing distance to
the camera.

ED means "Extra low Dispersion glass". This is a good thing.

The D lens is NOT an AF-S. It far predates Nikon coming up with
AF-S.

This appears from the description to be the newer version that
will autofocus with recent low-end Nikon DSLRs (D40, D40s, D60,
D3000, D5000). I'd have to compare my D lens to the picture to
be sure, but I won't be in the same place as the lens until Tuesday
evening.

The lens in the auction mentionned is AF-S, the latest version and it is compatible with the D5000
