I recently purchased the suunto pc interface kit for my vyper. I have read all the previous posts about the problems mac users have experienced and I, alas, am experiencing them now. I have Virtual PC 5 and have a Belkin USB/Serial portable adaptor which has been assigned COM 3 on the Windows 98 platform I am running in VPC. I am running MAC OS 9.2 for what it's worth. When I perfom the TEST option in the PC Transfer window I can see the TR/RC lights come on and go off on the adaptor but the program is still not finding the interface.
Someone mentioned that it might be an IRQ or COM port designation problem, but never went into any detail as to how to detect or correct the problem.
Someone else mentioned that something else may be sequestering the port before the suunto program can find the interface but they didn't go into details as to addressing that issue either.

So... if someone could be so kind as to help me out with some suggestions here I would be very very grateful.

Cheers,

Cak

Do you have COM3 setup in your VPC settings? I'm using COM2 and have the port set as a "Mac Serial Port" and selected my serial/USB adaptor from the pull down list and the "Modem" check box unchecked.

I can tell you from previous experience with other hand held electronics and serial PC communications that I only had success with the Keyspan #USA-19QW serial/usb adaptor. *I* did not have success with the Keyspan #USA-19 or the Belkin product. I haven't had a single glitch with the keyspan product with my Suunto Cobra, GPS or programmable remote.

Miesemer,

I do not have COM 3 set up in the settings for VPC. How do I do that? However, when I went to correct this I noticed that the USB port is not listed as an option (only modem or printer port). Is there something I need to do to enable it?
I have heard of other people having success with the Belkin product but if after tomorrow I cannot get it to work it will be returned for a keyspan.

This whole VPC experience has been a great labor...sigh. I spoke with someone from suunto a while back who said there I shouldn't give up on them yet for creating a program that would work on mac. I ain't gonna hold my breath though (it's been six months at least).

After you have your virtual environment started go to the 'Settings' under the edit menu. Do not enable the USB option at the bottom of the left hand pane. I have my COM1 setup for a modem and COM2 for the serial adapter. Try selecting COM2 and select 'Mac Serial Device" in the right hand pane. Once that's selected you should be able to select the serial adaptor in the drop down list below it. Once you have this set go back to the Dive Manager software and test the connection with your interface cable connected to the adapter but without the dive computer connected. Let me know if this helps or if you need any other suggestions.

Miesemer,

I still only have the option to select modem or printer port for my COM 1 or 2. When I select modem for COM 1 that makes the default for COM 2 printer. I see no other options. Is there a way that I can get my serial adaptor to show up here?

Cheers,

Cak
