I had contacted Luna Beach about a week ago to arrange diving with them. After I sent them an e-mail, I read the comments concerning their not supporting the Marine Park.

This is the second e-mail that I sent them and their response.

Thank you for your reply, but I have decided to dive with a dive shop that supports the Roatan Marine Park .

Thank You

Roger

Their response:

Thank you for the info. I hope that you do not mind that I explain you very briefly why we are not supporting the Marine Park (at least for now):

From 2007 on the Marine Park raised the prices from $5 to $10, which we knew in advance and actually were supporting this. Unfortunately during the last few months we did not see any efforts in the Marine Park any more. A lot of moorings were missing and did not get replaced though many dive shops were complaining about it. Moreover the local fishermen are coming back to the Marine Park to do their fishing on the dive sites, as well as professional fishing charters. Sailing boats are dumping all the sewage in the lagoon and although there are a lot of operators known for their leaking engines on the dive boats (oil), the Marine Park did not take any action.

We had several meetings with the guys from the Marine Park but they said their hands are tied. We offered them to help installing moorings or legal assistance to solve the fishermen-problem but nothing happened. We told the Marine Park that as soon as we see any efforts, we will support them again. Please do not hesitate to contact the Marine Park office to confirm this.

This is why we decided for now not to charge our guests the fee because it would not be fair to charge all that money for nothing. A Marine Park where everyone can do whatever he wants is not what we consider a Marine Park . But still we stick on to all the rules of the Park.

I also want to mention that recently some moorings were replaced by the Marine Park office and we hope that things will improve so that it is worth to support it again.

I can understand your point but I hope that you will understand ours.

Even if you are diving with an other dive shop I wish you a lot of fun on Roatan and some fantastic dives.

Saludos…

The one thing that I do not understand; Luna Beach pays nothing to the Park, it is the diver that pays the fee.

I've made my decision, you can make your's.

We'll see you in May! If you wait until the 6th we'll join you in the Nitrox class!

Also, I have to call BS on the following statement from the email:

But still we stick on to all the rules of the Park.

This is from Shar34's trip report, posted last week regarding Luna Beach. Roatan Trip Report - Luna Beach

Shar34:
Almost everyone else wore a full 3 mil and some of the women added hoods, gloves, vests or shorty over full. Seemed extreme to me. Maybe living in WA we've just adjusted to being cold?!

The marine park signs I have seen on the boats (laminated 8.5" x 11") clearly state no gloves in the marine park.
