Hey all Just wanted to introduce myself. I just finished open water and am loving the process. heading to hawaii and will give an update after my first 50 dives.

I made this post for a couple reasons

BOOKS, YOUTUBE, AND DIVE SITES
To get recommendations on dive books, youtube channels, and dive sites i should check out. I have been reading the Scuba compendium (Scuba Compendium)
and have technically speaking lined up after i finish that monster
(Technically Speaking - Talks on Technical Diving Volume 1: Genesis and Exodus)

GEAR
showing what it cost us to get fully kitted out and to get some ideas on gear reccomendations after our first 50 dives. The goal was to get quality gear that we could keep for 200 dives if we wanted too, equipment that can grow with us, or swap out for more technical diving but not have to fully replace it all. I sought solid deals on good kit where i could and bought new where i could.

Im very interested in the technical side of diving and my wife is very interested in the cinematography/ photography of the ocean so any advice woud be awesome. again thanks for such a welcoming community of people.

TLDR: love the journey of diving, would love recommendations on books/ videos on dive topics and gear for hawaii.

Hey , welcome from a fellow newbie! I did a try dive in Poipu, Kauai last Feb. I can’t wait to go back to Hawaii, such an amazing place. Looking forward to hearing about your journey!

how did you like kauai? were going to be in oahu for a couple years so plenty of time to dive all the islands

Loved Kauai, it was me and my wife's favorite. Were most likely going to move there once the kids graduate. Oahu’s north/north-east side of the island was a close second. We really like the country laid back vibes as opposed to the busy city life of say Honolulu. We did a 7 day cruise through Norwegian Cruise Lines. Military?

Welcome to ScubaBoard! I'm former military; retired after 20 years. I was stationed on Oahu for six years and found the book The O'ahu Snorkelers and Shore Divers Guide by Francisco de Carvalho a wonderful resource for the shore diving on Oahu. You can get yourself a copy via Amazon. Night diving on Oahu's North Shore at Three Tables and Shark's Cove during the months of May through September are some of my fondest diving memories.
