How many of you have lost gear, and what gear have you lost, and under what circumstances was it lost?

Snorkle

I got tired of my mask leaking, and I got tired of it rapping against the side of my head in the current.

I pulled it off and threw it as far as I could into the river. Not the most ecological manover, but damn did it feel good at the time.

I lost lead, unzipped and fell out of my pouch after much working with ropes, working with divers, and getting on the boat and off the boat. Only 3 lbs, but the Zeagle weight pouch was 16 bucks.

Also, lost my arm slate. I told myself it falling off the crowded clip was an accident, and the slate was breaking anyway where the pencil was kept.

Oh, and lost my mask. This one hurt. First big thing I lost (and last), the same way as the slate. I'm getting more clips and looking closely at my gear configuration. It was my brand new mask, a perfect fit, soft, anti-fog, and color correction for lake muck.

On the other hand I have a newly found dive knife, and my buddy has a newly found light and 5 lb weight.

Found more than I lost... snorkels, mask, kniives... so I'm ahead of the game. Also, ex-divers have given me gear, so I've inherited a 2 lights, 3 masks, 2 sets of fins, 2 snorkels (I've got 7 snorkels and don't even use one!), a gear bag and a computer.

BTW, you titled this thread as a poll, but there is no poll.
PERFECT! That's how a poll should be! :eyebrow:

2 torches. Both on the same wreck (a year between dives).

One was a little SL6 so no great loss, one was a D8R which proved costly.

Ive also lost a mask somewhere between the boat and the dive site and to this day have no idea how.

I lost a dive knife on one dive only for it to be returned by the person who went down the shotline 2mins behind me.

2 weeks ago i found a small pocket torch at 25m but had lost it again by the time i surfaced.

In no particular order... watch, snorkel, DSMB, fin strap and, almost, fin, (rescued by a friendly buddy team who were testament to the skills learned in the rescue and recovery specialty).

I believe that the Gods of diving insist you must never go more than a few weeks without buying a new bit of kit. If you can't think of anything you need they just make you lose something you already have.

Ive had a DSMB explode on surfacing (the overpressure valve didnt work!). Not sure if that counts as lost but i had to buy a new one afterwards so similar outcome :)

Watch, snorkel, and Wetnotes.

Watch: lost somewhere between 70 and 40' in the St Lawrence river in a racing current. Noticed it absent when I went to begin a safety stop (which I ended up counting off in my head). It was a backup backup, my 'primaries' having dead batteries, and the strap wasn't all that secure.

Snorkel: I don't use a snorkel but for good measure once I tried using it on a rough surface swim out. Put it in my pocket (or thought I did) upon reaching descent point. After the dive it was no longer there. I wouldn't have bothered replacing it at all except needing a new one for underwater hockey.

Wetnotes: On a long underwater swim out to a wreck (in the River again, but mild current this time). Pulled it out to write buddy a note, replaced it and didn't bother clipping it off inside the pocket - just fastened pocket over it. Or thought I did. Lesson learned: always clip stuff off into a pocket. That cost me $20 to replace.

Like I'm telling you! You just want to go see if you can find it for yourself.

My wife lost her safety sausage, her back up torch, and the octo holder, when she was forced to use a rental BC on a trip, they changed all her stuff over, but she forgot to retreive any of it at the end of the trip. I went back down (Roatan) about 3 months later, and no one at the dive op knew anything about finding any gear,(not suprising) even though I had contacted them right after we noticed it missing and asked them to hold the stuff for us. I figure it was an extra tip for one of the DM's The only thing I have lost to date was the front cover of my B/O octo, somewhere in Point Lobos SP and a couple of spare weights out of my BC pocket . Found a bunch of stuff though.
