Hi. I am a newly certified diver without my own dive computer. I am looking to purchase a relatively inexpensive computer (in comparison to more expensive models) and have been told that the Suunto Zoop might be a good first computer. I have no vision problems, so I don't think small numbers on the computer would necessarily be a big problem for me; however, I really don't know much about good starter computers that are not overly intricate. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions/tips/recommendations. Thanks.

If you do not have any money, you can get one of the, does air only, computers that are on sale/being discontinued (scubatoys is one of the places you can look ..the VEO100 is a basic computer for $139)

But .. if you can afford it, get one that can do nitrox .. I never thought I would need that feature from the one I got, but I did now that I have a nitrox cert .. that means I didn't have to buy another computer

Edit: sorry, didn't know the Zoop was nitrox capable

Last week, Divers Direct had the Veo 180 for 200 bucks---& maybe?? free shipping too------The special was for 1 day I think, you might want to check this offer out further.....link..

One Day Super Deal!

I have personally used suunto computers for years and have been very happy with them. The Zoop looks cool, but it's too new for us to have any reviews on it just yet. We have it here if you need any more information on it: Suunto "Zoop" Air/Nitrox Wrist Computer

I picked up this computer (VEO 180) last friday from Divers Direct and will say it does exactly what I need a computer for and its nitrox compatable. No complaints at all for me and the price was great only $200 most other computers with same features I have seen for $300+

Thanks for the help, everyone.

Zaixon, is Divers Direct a reputable Dive company? The reason I ask is because I have heard that many dive shops will not or sometimes cannot service certain pieces of equipment if they are bought online?

Not Zaixon here---but I have bought from them as early as 10+ years ago with never any problems(reason I get emails from them on sales, etc)......

They are a great company with multiple shops all over florida. I think they currently have 5 stores and they have their own service section in each store (i've been to 3 of their stores) so I do think it would be a problem mailing them anythin to have serviced but I would ask under the question section on their website cause I am not positive on this. I got certified for AOW and Nitrox with their Ft. Lauderdale location and have a great experience, they go about their business very professionally, I highly recommend :thumb:

For various reasons (servicing, warranty issues, ease of use), I have narrowed my choices down to the Suunto Vyper and the Suunto Zoop. Both seem to have similar screen layouts and can do similar functions, but the Vyper seems to do a bit more. Does anyone have any experience/suggestions with either the Vyper or the Zoop or any info. regarding the Vyper vs. Zoop debate?
