From an instructional standpoint the benefit to a pony can be that of insuring enough air in the instance of a student needing your gas for a safe ascent.

I know of a couple of instructors who would switch themselves to their pony's after giving their primary/octopus to their student. This helps to insure that the student will have plenty of air and the instructor will usually have more than enough air with the pony.

I suggest a 19 cu. ft. with a "quick draw pony bottle bracket" These brackets can be somewhat hard to find in some areas but if you do a websearch for them they will pop up redily.
