Hello,

Just recently certified and am taking my first out of country dive in Australia. Will be flying into Cairns in mid-September and wanted to know if anyone had any experience with local operators.

Unfortunately, I will only be in Cairns for 2 days (one will be for decompression) - so a day trip is all I can do. I'm interested in personal experiences with dive operators more so than locations (as I hear those are determined by weather, visibility, etc.). I'd prefer an operator that limits the divers as opposed to the 40 people party boat deal.

Finally, is there anything I need to know or watch out for if I am bringing my own underwater camera rig - please let me know. One thing I'm really struggling with is whether to bring filter (is water Green or Blue??), lights, both or neither for the relatively shallow reef.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there. I live and work in Cairns as a dive instructor (since 1991) and have experience with most of the trips there. Also I run a small web booking site that offers discount on the trips there for divers from these forums.

Here is a link that gives details of some of the better day trips out of Cairns. Feel free to drop me a line if you need any more info.

Tusa or Silverswift has less passengers and a better crew to passenger ration. You will still get around 40 passengers or so though. Not many boats operate with less.

As for the camera rig, water is green. But sandy bottom so you get lot of back scatter and in the shallows may not need filter. If you have one, a light red / orange filter works well. There are photo pros on both boats that may able to give advice too.
