That demo. is a really old, classic octopus experiment. It is over 30+ years old.
I had several Octopuses (that is the correct terminology - not Octopi) which I tested. They never tried escaping. At some point the experiments were terminated because it was clear the guys would never work their way out. The orifice was easily larger than their beaks. The species was Octopus bimaculoides.
Another classic is using a corked, transparent bottle with a live prey animal inside. The cork has a hole through which the Octo. can verify if the critter inside is real. Of course, my guys did total jack and never uncorked the bottle.
On the bright side, one guy came out of his little lair everyday at exactly 1:00 pm for a look-see.
