Dunno ...they existed (in primative form) back in 1971 when I did my open water cert but not everyone used them. Back in the 70's living in southeast Florida I used to dive anywhere from 4 - 6 times a week (shore dives) so it got a little ridiculous trying to keep track of all my dives. By the time I got back into training in the 80's for my AOW it seemed like everyone was using them. For Rescue and Divemaster in the 90's they were mandatory.

There is an old adage: "If you don't log it, it didn't happen."

There is also one about navigation: "Write you name across the seas. Erase it for all I care. But log it."

Who came up with that one?

Who, What, Where, When, Why...
Kinda like the difference between History and Mythology

This is a curious thread, are you really just looking for the origin of the practice of logging dives? Remember that advancement, even today in some cases depends on having documented experience. For my needs it's much more valuable as a keepsake.

The origin of the dive log. We all have reasons for logging or not logging our dives but where did it all begin. Did Jacques Cousteau start it?

I don't know who started the dive log, but I do know that if you decide to do Rescue and Master Scuba Diver with PADI you will need to have your dives logged. It turns out the number of dives for MSD is not near enough, but that's a discussion for another day . . . at 100 dives you're still wet behind the ears! Maybe that's a good thing??

What percentage of divers would you say, just let the get logged in a Sunnto, or computer? I would LOVE to see a poll on this.

I know over the past 35 years I have forgotten to log many dives but now I let the computor take note and log then when I get time. The log book has never told anybody how experienced or safe you are. It's just ink on a piece of paper. Only your buddy knows for sure, and thats what counts.
