# of dives
Need to get a logbook for final OW dives. I found a really cheap one on Amazon below.

Basic 60 page log book, nothing fancy. I have protective material for it just fine. I just want to make sure if you need an "Official" SSI logbook or PADI logbook when your SSI instructor says you need a log book on final dive.

You need something official looking enough for him to sign. And show on the next dive(s) till you get your card.

After that, not so much unless you're doing some specialty dives where the prerequisite might be # of dives or something.

Unless you go on in your classes, in which case you'll want to maintain some version for that since some have a minimum dive count b4 acceptance into the program. I've kept mine online the last decade or so - I use diverecord.com but there's better options now.

Most dive computers have the option to download your dives directly into any number of dive log software programs - including several for your phone.

If you have a hole punch and a 5x8 binder handy: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/ba...-free-dive-log-pages-download-pdf-here-2.html

If you're SSI I'm fairly sure you need to log all your training dives outside of pool work also prior to being certified.

fwiw, I've been two places in 30+ years of diving where they've wanted to see mine.

Your training materials didn't include a log book for your OW dives? That seems odd to me...

That said, the 3 or 4 I have all have specific training dives listed as such but other than that any log book should work. You number the dive, log what happened, and have it signed by your instructor. Easy peasy.

You can record dives with anything you want. A simple Microsoft Word template would be fine. Don't let the agencies trick you into thinking their logbooks are "official" and super special. If a dive shop doesn't like you because you don't have an "official" logbook then I'd say go find a different shop.

Normally your first logbook is part of the OW package as far as I know, it was when I did mine many years ago.

That said there are plenty of places that will ask you for some form of ID plus proof of diving within the last 6 months especially in the region where I dive (Middle East / SE Asia / UK)

Everyone is correct, my OW classes did come with a log book. However, my G/F and I are sharing the class material which is why we need to purchase a 2nd log book. We just have the initial one.

I thought it was odd the LDS wants $40.00 for an SSI dive book from their store whereas I found the above link for $4.00, and other more robust versions upwards of $20.00.

That's not odd. They're just greedy.

Downloadable dive computers come with divelog programs. And don't forget all of the logbock apps for your smartphones. Like everything else, some are better than others.

As for logbooks, I've seen basic daily diaries used, small spiral notebooks, and even a small artists sketchbook full of lovely colored pencil drawings of the cool things seen on the dives and occasional photos & post cards glued in as part of the mementos of the dive.

YOUR dive log is what YOU make it.

$40 for a logbook may be a 'good' price- it really depends what comes with it. Binders for example bump up the price. Agencies view materials such as logbooks and other printed media as a cash-cow. I don't know if the shop will make a profit on this or not. Some PADI logbooks are selling at $70+ with binder, pre-printed sheets etc.

For me a logbook is a notebook. A glossy cover helps somewhat for water droplets.

It doesn't need a turtle on the front to be a logbook.
