I am going to PNG in November and was thinking of matching it up with a three, four or five day liveaboard based out of Cairns, Australia. I am looking for info on any of the operations based out of Cairns and was wondering if anyone has done any of these and how they were. I have been diving the Aggressor and Dancer fleet liveaboards and was wondering how they compared with them. Any info would be appreciated.. Also, whick trip is better, the coral sea or great barrier reef?

Ask me in about 3 years - hopefully I'll know from experience. BUT....I personally would do the Coral Sea but my understanding is that if you go there you'll be doing more than a 3-4 day trip. Mike Ball for example will do the GBR for the first few days then go out to the Coral Sea for those guests staying on the boat for a full week.

I just did the Star Dancer in PNG, WHAT AN EXPERIENCE - you will NOT be disappointed. The reefs are awesome, the macro life was like nothing I'd ever seen (stick with the dive guides - Joe, Martin and Yuki rock!), and the muck diving was amazing as well. I'd never went muck diving before, and though I thought this would be a "side thought", like a type of diving I'd try but not like that much, I thought the muck sites were some of MY personal favorite. Other divers liked them but were not ready to call them their favorites, but I personally loved the muck dives. If you go in November you'll probably hit the Witu Islands, don't miss Witu Crater - it's a great anchorage at night and the muck dive there is the best muck dive we had in my opinion!

If I had the opportunity to do some diving on the way there or back, I'd actually stop in Sydney, Australia for a few days and do some colder water diving. You'll be there in the start of the Austral summer so the water might not be as cold. They apparently have great muck diving and a chance to see the Leafy Sea Dragon!

I love that type of diving, after getting drysuit certified in the Puget Sound on vacation last year I never miss an opportunity to try it. I would have hit Sydney on this trip but just didn't have time, I was running short on time off from work as it was!

Another option, and this is WAY out of left field, but if I was flying from Florida - I would think about stopping in southern California for a couple days. Dive the Channel Islands while you're there on a 2 day liveaboard. It will be cheaper, PLUS....you could book your airfare originating from and returning to Los Angeles, most flights across the Pacific are cheaper from LA as opposed to most other places. Just do your Florida to California flights seperately with a day or so of leeway on both ends of the trip. California or Sydney is what I'd do to get some temperate diving while I'm on vacation. You'd definitely be mixing it up by doing that and then going to PNG!

Have a great trip and PM me if you have any questions about PNG.

If you DO hit the GBR or Coral Sea, look up Mike Ball diving expeditions. That liveaboard offers guests the option of staying on the boat the whole week or part of the week.

--T-minus about 365 days until Palau!!--

I have no hesitation in recommending a trip on either Spoilsport (Mike Ball's boat) or Spirit of Freedom. You can read our trip reports on both boats.

You can do a four night trip to Ribbon Reefs and Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea or better still a seven night trip (two back-to-back trips).

Osprey Reef is in pristine condition with spectacular colourful soft corals that often exceed 2m in height. Shoals of pelagic fish and amazing walls will leave you wanting more no-stop time.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised when comparing the Cairns boats to other operators.

We did the 7-day liveaboard on Spirit of Freedom out of Cairns in 2006. Superb vessel & crew; outstanding dives. If you can afford it, the longer cruise is really the way to go.

IMHO, Spirit of Freedom is one of the premier liveaboards out there. We've been on several, plus ran our own sail/dive charter in the Bahamas for a couple of years; SOV is top notch.

Important note: don't forget about the difference in the seasons between here & Oz when considering when to book your dive!

I would say that you are being given the best advice on the liveaboard off the GBR. Spoilsport and Spirit are certainly excellent choices.
When I was there 7 yrs. ago, there was a liveaboard out of Port Douglas that worked well for us.
To get the better diving you want to be at a point from Lizard Island north on the GBR.

On another note we've been to Cairns twice, the second time when we went on a liveaboard to PNG. Cairns has a lot of things to see and do. My favorite tour was called the wait awhile tour.
We had a hike around a mountain lake, dinner at a mountain restaurant then went into the rainforest at night with lights to see the tree kangaroos, possums and plenty of other sites. This tour also took you on private property to see the duckbilled platypus.

I hope you have fun, the Aussies are warm people, and remember NO TIPPING. We were asked several times not to tip because it is not their culture.

My family and I took the Spirit of Freedom 3-day Cod Hole & Ribbons reef trip last year. The ship is extremely nice, the crew was great and the food on board was terrific. We had 5 dives per day with one night dive. Generally the allowed us to dive on our own, but were very conscious of dive profiles.

The ship continued on for 4 more days of diving and I spoke with a passenger who stayed on for the remaining 4 days. They stated the first 3 days were the best days of diving.

We're also headed to PNG in November as well and decided to do the same thing. From Alaska, the easiest route to PNG is through Australia, and we couldn't see skipping the GBR if we were going to be in the area. We ended up extending the trip by two weeks so we could check out Oz, and part of that includes 7 days on Spoilsport.

65 days and counting... excited as all hell.

I had an excellent time on the Spoilsport. Excelent crew and itinerary. They had an incredible divemaster to guest ratio. Whenever my wife wanted a break (I dive a LOT on liveaboards) I was able to have my own divemaster for a buddy. They have both halfweek and full week trips so you could custom design your vacation. Diet before you go. Enjoy!
