I'm going to Australia in mid/late July. Is it true that I don't have to book my liveaboard in advance?? An Aussie I met last year said to just show up in Cairns and I will get some great last minute deals since it's off-season. What do you think?

I wold not be certain of that but it is possible considering the prices they charge. Oz liveaboards are horribly expensive and IMO not worth that kind of money unless you have it to throw around. Therefore, waiting for a last minute bargain might be worth it if you are going to Cairns anyway but be repared to be disappointed just in case.

My very first lveaboard trip - a 4 day one in the GBR - was back in September 2006. The boat (I do'nt recall its name) was good but nothing special. The same could be said about the diving.

If you are prepared to miss the diving altogether then this will work. On the one liveaboard trip to the GBR I did the trip was discounted by 30% because I filled an empty spot leaving the next morning. This was 10 years ago so things might have changed, but supply/demand economics have not changed so likely it has not.
