Greetings (or should I say G'day)

My wife and I are heading to Oz next month for 2 weeks, with 4 days to be spent on the Spirit of Freedom...all that I've read so far has me salivating to get there, especially littleguppie's recent post....

However, I do have a couple of questions about gear to take...we're planning on taking most of our dive gear (BC, regs, wetsuits, masks, fins, computer), but I wonder what else should we bring....here's my list of questioned items...your input greatly appreciated....

gloves
knives
hoods
compass
snorkle

I think we'll rent lights there for the night dives (more weight than we need for the balance of the trip). Any other gear items that you would recommend?

Also, our trip will have us 3 days in Cairns, 3 in Sydney and 3 in Melbourne. Any suggestions on places to eat, drink, dive, swim, lounge, party, etc etc. ;)

George

Gloves.... why
Knives.... why
Hoods..... why

Compass.... sure
Snorkle...... compulsory

Hi Andrew: Wife and I are booked on SOF 13Oct--can't wait--we also are bringing our gear--knew computer was mandated but understood snorkle was optional--is it definitely compulsory? We normally dive this time of year the carrib in skins or 1mill wet suit, think that is adequate or should we bring 3mill wetsuit?.....if water temp is 80we usually make 3-4 per day with skins.
PS: What happened in the Footy game..... I took you up on that $2 bet and assume that Queensland prevailed, do I owe you!!!

There's reasons you hear about people drifting away on the GBR. It would be nice to have a snorkel if you were away from the boat for a bit.

Hi George

In any part of your trip does it involve flying to or from Lizard Island?
If so you need to look at weight restrictions there for that as it is just a small plane.

Compass, yes.
Snorkel, I would.
Hood, not really needed even on a night dive on the reef.
Gloves, cant hurt I always wear mine but there the thin warm water ones.
Knives, thats your choice.

I will post some info on Cairns etc and what to do as soon as copy and paste it from another thread for you.

SMB AND WHISTLE!!!

these are required by law in sunny queensland

and yes to gloves... i dont like going down a mooring line or hanging for the safety stop and having to hold a yukky line thats got growth on it

enjoy!!

edit: sydney is a big place, do you like fancy or just plan yummy but im kinda partial to The Lord Nelson at the Rocks for their pies and home brew beer

Here is the cut and paste info about Cairns from another thread I posted it in.
Ill find some Sydney info for you too.

Here are some links of things in Cairns I enjoy.

The most important piece of equipment you need, you do not have to bring but can buy when you get here, would be a looooooooooooong rope so ypu can tie yourself to the dive boat. Those banana benders seem to have a problem with tourists of late. :rofl3::rofl3::D:D
