I spotted a small lionfish today in Gregory Channel off Hassell Island in St Thomas. It was captured and killed by another diver on the boat. It's only 4 inches long but capable of eating a huge pile of reef fish.
The threat to our islands is real. If you are an experienced diver and live in St Thomas or will be visiting, please consider helping out. You get to go on a two tank dive to beautiful reefs for only $25. There is a similar program in St Croix. Send an e-mail to nolionfishstt@yahoo.com (St Thomas) or nolionfishstx@yahoo.com (St Croix).
Not a diver? Even snorkelers, fishermen, and boaters can help out by learning to identify the fish and making note of their location (using a marker provided by participating dive shops, or noting GPS readings for boaters and fishermen).
If you are not aware of the lionfish threat, go to the Facebook page of Caribbean Lionfish Response or do a google search. While it's a beautiful fish, it has no predators in our waters and is very destructive.
