I recently pruchased a second UK Light Cannon to use for my UW video setup. It will compliment my 1yr old LC.

When I bought the new light I did not have my old LC100 with me to compare. At home, I found a drastic color temperature difference between the old (neutral light color) and the new (HID-blueish).

Has anyone else seen this behavior? Could it be that HID bulbs age? I have also noted that the light circle is much more uneven in the new light when comapred to my old one. In fact, I went through 4 differnt lights in the shop before I could find one with an even distribution. All others had a V-shaped highlight like you would see from a filament bulb...

I guess I will have to color-correct one of the light to not make the video look funky...

Any help is appreciated!

The light cannon is a bluish light and I don't know if its geared for photography. Aren't there strobes you can use for video taping. What did the dive shop suggest. I think the light canon is a great night diving light.

I would be using it for video and the bluish color is no problem since you can set a manual whitebalance. My problem is that my left light is of different color than my right light.

Strobes would make for crappy video footage as they dispense light only for milliseconds at a time...:-)

UK says it is production variation but upon closer inspection I can see that the HID bulbs between the two lamps are different. The "glass bubble" inside the bulb is clear on the bluish light, milky on the white light.

Anybody else notice that?

Took some macro shots of the two LC100 bulbs. Clearly a difference. The frosted version produces a much more even beam than the clear version...if I could only return it and go bulb-hunting...

I don't think it will make any difference to your video, since your subjects will be illuminated by both lights at the same time.

It will just be a slightly warmer or cooler temperature light than you had before.

Hi,

HID bulbs age, yes. You can easily see when it is the time for your bulb to die. If even a little schock will cause your light to switch off, then it will be the time for the replacement.
There is a Welch Allyn bulb in your Cannon Light 100. The ballasts WA is using do not have a power regulation , that means if you use fully charged batteries you will have a white light and if the batteries are getting empty the power will decrease and so cause a light that is getting more and more blue.
It is also correct that there is a big variation in the production line. Don't forget, WA is not producing systems for divers, they are producing medical devices that are abused for diving. The only manufacturer I know that is producing HID systems AND diving lights is Brightstar in Taiwan. That is why I import them here in Germany (on the other side of the world, seen from you). The rest uses automotive or medical devices for their lights.
So as conclusion: If you want to have the same colour temperature you have to care for the same power conditions.

Greetings, Michael
