Here is the quick run down: 2 adults wanting to dive in the mornings, bringing along 2 kids and their grandma. Basically we are looking for suggestions allowing for a great vacation for everyone, the kids will be looked after by my mom while we dive in the morning so kids club isn't necessary but a great plus.
Only the 2 adults are divers so there needs to be plenty of other activities on site.

Thanks in advance for all your suggestions!

There's Breezes - on Curacao. They have a kids program. http://www.breezes.com/resorts/curacao/

Same great diving as Bonaire (same reef) but a lot more to do for the kids - the Ostrich farm, the Sea Aquarium nearby, even small children can do the Dolphin Encounter - http://www.dolphin-academy.com/eng/dolphinprog.htmlThere's also some historical sights in downtown Willemstad - and the floating bridge between Punda and Otrabunda.

Lots of nice non-dive beaches. Famous shopping downtown for the adults, some nightlife, about a dozen casinos, some good oceanfront restaurants. http://www.curacao.com/Attractions-and-Restaurants

There are also several excellent shore dives off nice beaches if the whole family wanted to go together. At a couple the kids could snorkel above the divers easily - Tugboat for example is a snorkel stop for the cruise traffic but the boat itself is 20' to the bottom.

Not such a great beach there though - the better ones are west - Playa Lagun, Porto Mari, Varsenbaai etc. At Varsenbaai there will often be turtles feeding on the grass in 5-6' of water just off the beach - coming back in off the dive we swam with several small kids there. All three also have an on-site dive operator/snack shop combo.

You can also shore dive with the Dive Bus - they'll pick you up at most of the resorts in town.

Might be easier to get to than Bonaire also - it was for us.

dont take non divers to bonaire.

maybe drop the kids of at disneyland with gramma.

I love Bonaire, and I hardly believe I'm saying this, but it may not be your match. Following up what others have said and more:

1.) Not much sandy beach. A few places, like Eden Beach Resort, have some sandy beach, but nothing like people associate with sandy beaches on Aruba, for example.

2.) Bonaire is a place people go to dive often, day in & day out, not just in the morning, then do other things in the afternoon. Not saying it can't be done, but that's not what this location mainly draws.

3.) Washington-Slagbaai Park can be a nice scenic drive maybe 1/2 day one day.

4.) Wind Surfing at Lac Bay (Jibe City) and Kite Boarding (west coast, down toward the southern portion) are activities other than diving, but I doubt little kids or grandma would be doing those.

5.) Donkey Sanctuary would be interesting to some for a few hours.

Doing a 2-tank morning dive following by afternoons free for family fun exploring an exotic tropical destination is pretty much the game plan at land-based charter boat op. sites like Cozumel. I haven't been to Curacao, but it is said to have more for non-divers to do (it's said for a dive vacation go to Bonaire, for a vacation with diving go to Curacao). At Cozumel you could probably do one of those dolphin encounter excursions like the cruise ships offer, and that could rock the kids' world! Or dive Belize & take a side-trip to walk in the jungle & see Mayan ruins.

Are these 'country kids' from a rural setting who can amuse themselves walking around looking at plants, lizards, goats & scenery, or are these 'city kids' accustomed to the opportunities & stimulation of more urban settings & fuss if there's no shopping mall?

Richard.

Take my non-diving wife's advice:

Bonaire is where divers go to vacation.
Curacao is where vacationers go to dive.

Have been to Curacao three times (so far) with my non-diving wife and non-diving kids. Everyone has a great time. As mentioned above, lots to do, lots of great beaches. Many of the nicest beaches have dive ops right there. We'd regularly go to some beautiful beach, I'd play with the kids, we'd snorkel, kayak, whatever. At some point I'd say to my wife "I'm going for a quick dive... want me to grab you a Pina Colada on the way back?" Then I'd throw my gear on, walk into the water, do a dive, and 45min later I'd be back on the lounge chair next to my wife... with two Pina Coladas.

:-)

We stay at the Marriott, as we detest Beaches type places. With Curacao shore diving there's no reason to be "gone all morning" to dive. Take the family with you wherever you're going, and you'll only be "away" while you're underwater. In fact the boat at the Marriott will often come back to the Marriott between dives on 2-Tank trips for the surface interval - depending on dive-site selection. When I do boat dives from the Marriott my family always hangs out at the beautiful beach right by the dive shop, and comes over to the boat to hear about dive 1 before we head back out. They'll even let your kids tag-along on the boat if you like.

Highly recommended!

(it's said for a dive vacation go to Bonaire, for a vacation with diving go to Curacao).

I'll have to tell my wife that she has attained "...it's been said..." status!

There were quite a few family's at Buddy Dive last time we were there. They had a great program for the kids while the parents were out diving. The kids had a great time (from what I saw). Here is some info from Buddy's site on the programs: Kids Programs. I think this would allow you time to go dive with "the adults."

Disregard this...I just saw the part about grandma coming along....

Then I agree with the others that Bonaire might not be the best place....
