Personally, I get a lot of my gear from EBay. As you can well imagine, there are plenty of people out there who get scuba certified, buy some excellent gear, and then promptly stick it in a closet and forget about it until their spouse makes them get rid of it. There are also several LDSs that use auction services to liquidate surplus gear. That equals some excellent deals.
I got a lovely Genesis regulator setup with octopus and console dirt cheap from a shop in Arizona that had purchased it as rental equipment and then never rented it out. It was still unused, in the bubble wrap and original packaging.
Of course, I take any used gear I get to the LDS for service and inspection before using it. I also go to the local shops for instruction, air services, occasional boat trips, small things like weights, and for the often expensive pleasure of window shopping. I give them lots of business, and after spending hundreds of dollars a year there, I don't feel at all bad about occasionally buying equipment where I can get the best deals.
