Hey all,

While diving in Komodo the search for Tee the Thai diver was happening. I was talking to an instructor and asking her about the search. I asked her how it was conducted and she told me that basically there was a ring around to the local dive operators to be on the lookout. And that was about it. I said "what about an air search"? She told me it depends on whether your insurance company is going to pay or not. Not that comforting. That got me thinking about my travel insurance (it didn't mention searching for me if I was lost at sea) and my own contingency plans when diving overseas (since most problems occur on the surface). What have you guys learned through the experiences of others here. What do we need to consider?

All the best

Get a PLB, personal locator beacon and a dive canister and you're good to go, if you're alive, you will be found.

My canister leaked and triggered my epirb :(( didn't have it when I was diving there

PLB, no Epirb, they are nice and small and don't automatically go off.

So how did it all turn out when your Epirb went off? I imagine that must have been interesting, especially if you were not able to get to a phone.

My emergency contacts called me from Australia as well as rescue services. The Epirb isn't supposed to be activated that way so caused worry for nothing, but the alternative is worse. The unit couldn't be turned off so I had to wrap it in foil and wait for it to die. Hopefully McMurdo will give me a non faulty unit replacement since it was under warranty. The best laid plans hey...

Well, at least you know it works!!! :D
