I was hoping to get some advice on the best time to travel to Lembeh Strait. This would be our first trip to Indonesia. In looking at some of the resort websites, they mention that diving is year round, however I am sure that some parts of the year are more desirable than others. We will likely have at most 9 days total including travel from the East Coast (Washington DC area).
Which months would be best to go to Lembeh?
Any particular resorts stand out in Lembeh?
Should we split some of our time between Lembeh and nearby Bunaken, or just stay in Lembeh?
Thanks so much in advance for your thoughts!

Personally I would not try to fit in 2 resorts on such a short vacation. Travel within Indonesia takes longer than you expect.
While you can dive all year round there will be monsoon season(s). May to September is the dry season although its the wind that accompanies the rain that is more likely to spoil your diving.

Thanks Victor! I appreciate your thoughts. I'm sort of new to using ScubaBoard and this is very helpful. So the month I was thinking of was June which sounds then like a good time to go (I suppose July is also an option for us).
Can't wait to try the new Olympus OMD-EM1 in Lembeh. Thanks again!

Just back from diving in South Sulawesi over the christmas break. So some thoughts.

I don't need a wetsuit at that water temp, I just use a dive skin. If you feel the cold then maybe a 3 mm shorty would be enough. But you need a rash guard, full body include socks and take some antihistamine cream or something to stop the itch of bites/stings.

I don't use gloves but many there do, personally I think a pointer is enough to steady yourself against some dead coral or sand.

You need to have a tank banger or equivalent to make noise underwater. Even though I told the group I am slow as I am taking pictures I would look up and they would be disapearing into the distance. If you have a buddy then you are in a better position.

You need a safety sausage at minimum, the bigger the better, it is very easy to be seperated from the group and to come up on your own. Currents can be strong and it is easy to be 1/2 a mile apart. I don't see any reason to shoot from depth so no need for a reel as the prupose is to help the boat find you.

Diving can be very deep and the rules on experience can be elastic. A young german couple with 12 dives each were in a group that went below 40 metres (130 ft), they should have thumbed at 18 but just shows what a lack of experience can do. Oh yes and he was an air hog so was buddy breathing before the safety stop.

Electrical, take an extender with 4 sockets, that way you only need one adapter and one outlet to allow you to charge everything. Power can be erratic so one with a surge protector is a good idea. Indonesia is European plugs and 220 Volts but our resort had installed multi plugs so you could use UK or US, this is not common. Make sure everything is OK with 220 volts, If the wife is going then hair dryer, straightners, etc normally not good.

I do a days diving on a memory card and set of batteries, thus only have to open the housing back in the safety of my room. I take a card for every dive day and backup to a PC. Two camera batteries and 2 sets of batteries for the flash.

Weight for flying. Internal flights can be fussy so careful packing and a suitcase weighing machine are worth the effort. I pack my dive gear in the bottom of my suitcase (I do NOT recommend a dive bag, don't advertise valuable contents) but a battered hard shell case is perfect with an easily recognised mark. Spotted on staff flight case was a painted mobile phone number (not a bad idea).
If you are going to have a speedboat transfer assume that bags are going to get wet. No expensive leather, etc.

Well back to work.

Hi Bogdan,

Diving in Lembeh Strait is not dictated by the weather due to its protected location. What we do have, however, is a cooling trend where the water temps can drop to 24-26 C (75-79F), during the months of April – October, which is very healthy for the critters of Lembeh Strait. Another thing you may want to consider is the critters you want to see. Even though most of the famous Lembeh critters can be seen year-round, some have a tendency to be spotted more frequently during certain months.

Here at Lembeh Resort & Critters@Lembeh, we also offer day trips to Bangka (an area known for its clear water, schooling fish and lovely coral), should you want to explore outside the Strait and experience something different. So if this is something you might consider, then yes, do take the rainy season (Nov - Mar) in mind. But as you are thinking of June or July, that should be fine :)

Lembeh is a great place to try your new Olympus! Plenty of opportunities for you to experiment and learn.

I dived N Sulawesi during 2011 every ten weeks so I guess that would encompass all weather conditions roughly - and wouldnt say that any time is the season or the off season. Diving is year round. I wear a 3mm all year round and sometimes a lavacore hoody which acts mostly to keep my hair under control and can only ever remember coming in from one day dive at Bunaken cold. Victor has given you some good advice although I had no trouble with pickpockets and I travel solo and am female. I agree given the time you have may be better to stick to one island although if you arrive on a late night flight you will probably need a stay in manado...Murex, Tasik Riah or if you are heading to Lembeh the Grand Puri is central and reasonably luxurious for sulawesi as an overnight option. Also dont forget Bangka island......one of my favourites in N Sulawesi that can be combined with Bunaken or Lembeh. If you like walls and drifts, go to Bunaken. If you are into macro stuff go to Lembeh. For pinacles and walls and muck all in one, go to Bangka. Lembeh and Bunaken are a popular combination. All the ops such as critters (above) or froggies or black sands etc will give you pick up and transfer from airport. Expect a half day drive from the airport to Lembeh or Bangka, Bunaken is an less than an hour away max by boat from manado.
