I would like to make a pocket to have on my thigh to hold some extra stuff. Any suggestions.

Neoprene? If you have an old wet suit then cut an arm off and use that?
Membrane? If you have an old BCD then you could butcher that? Save the dump valve for when you make a lift bag!
I suppose its the same as most DIY bits, if you can utilise old stuff that is laying around its worth doing, if you have to go out and buy new materials then sometimes you don't end up financially better off.

Dive right in has a glue on pocket for $30.. I'd look at doing that, or at least look at it for an idea of how to do it.
