Greetings -- can anyone recommend a good place to learn to dive in NYC or in Westchester County? I'm a complete newbie though will be diving later this year with someone who has many years' experience. -- Zamama

You might want to stay away from Cement Shoes Lagoon and No Pay Protection Pond. :D

Good luck and take your time in your research. Don't jump at the first one.

Welcome.

Recommending a training facility is hard because people generally get their basic training from one shop and therefore have nothing to compare the experience with. I got my open water certification through Adventure Scuba in Manhattan last summer and was happy with the shop and the training. Whether another shop would have been better or worse, I can't say.

The important thing to realize is that the open water course is only the beginning of training. I'm still working on improving trim/weighting, bouyancy control, and air consumption. Frequent diving/experience after certification is essential.

I did my class at Scuba New York in Yonkers. They have a pool in the store. Most dive shops in NYC do not have a pool on site. I think Pan Aqua's pool is in the gym next door. All the other shops have a pool off site. As far as the shops in NYC, You have Empire Divers on 2nd ave and 81st, Scuba Network on Lex and I think 56 st they also have another shop on 6 ave and 21st. Adventure scuba is on York ave in the 90's. Call them all and talk to them. I'm sure you can find the shop that fits you the best. Hope this helps.
