Learn Scuba Chicago’s (LSC) core objective is to provide scuba diving access and education to the general public by offering scuba educational programs and opportunities tailored to benefit communities with specific needs, and to promote education and conservation of underwater ecosystems which is all a part of our nonprofit organization. We are able to accomplish this through the charitable donations, grants, and the generosity of time given by our Divemaster Candidate (DMC) staff members, and our dive instructors; all of whom come from a variety of backgrounds. All of our staff and students are supported by the staff of our storefront aka “The Shop”.

The LSC Operations Manager and the Assistant Manager (aka “Managers”) oversee the daily operations of The Shop. They are responsible for running and maintaining the physical store location and everything within its walls as well as coordinating outside LSC Events. The Managers are also the main point of contact and key sales representatives for LSC. In many ways these positions are “the face” of the organization. These persons are also the key point of contact and responsible for reporting all shop activities to the Board of Directors.

Managers report directly to the Board of Directors, which is represented by a Director(s), the head of the Store Committee or “Shop Liaison(s)”. This Director will be the primary point of contact for shop-related questions, accounting reconciliation, store manager discounts, etc. The Shop Liaison also holds a tie-breaker vote for any stalemate decisions between store managers. The Managers may also interact on a regular basis with the Treasurer and President.

The LSC Assistant Manager will be responsible for the scheduling, volunteer coordination and much of the administrative operations of the shop. Scheduling and communication are key components of this role. It is expected that both managers be knowledgeable of and trained in the key responsibilities of their colleague to cover on days when they have off.

The LSC Assistant Manager will work collaboratively with and as a peer of the Operations Manager. They will both be responsible for the successful functioning of all aspects of the shop, however each will also focus on a set of key responsibilities within their role. Each manager will be evaluated on individual performance, and they will be rewarded through commission-producing goals.

All responsibilities are defined by the Board of Directors. The key responsibilities of the Assistant Manager are as follows but not limited to:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Monitoring students joining pools and quarry dates (check for payment, paperwork, and valid Groupons).
  • Staffing of pools (communicating shorthanded sessions and adding/dropping sessions in a timely manner).

  • Ensure availability of and initiating and maintaining pool/location relationships.
  • Track all transactions, pay bills, and update QuickBooks daily.

  • Coordinate income/sales tax payments (with accountant).
  • Coordinate 501c3 audits with the Board and audit approvals with the Treasurer.
  • Confirm all tax payments - sales, withholding, etc. are successfully transmitted in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain, secure and disperse tip monies to eligible volunteers.
  • Coordinate social media marketing with the Marketing committee.

  • Ensure timely payment of student fees.
  • Update insurance as staff come and go.
  • Email potential DMC applications, coordinating with the DMC/IA committee and answering questions.
  • Correspond with accountant, getting outside training for QuickBooks if necessary.

Skills
  • An understanding of retail practices

Hi Lionfish-eater,

Learn Scuba Chicago’s (LSC) Assistant Manager (AM) will receive a salary of $33,000 annually.
The breakdown of compensation will be 50% base, 30% profitability, and 20% previously given goals. The AM will be paid the full 100% of their paycheck bi-weekly, and the 50% that is not base will be evaluated each quarter.

The AM will be required to work a minimum of 30 hours per week.
The AM’s benefits are as follows: keyman eligibility during normal LSC spring and fall order periods, 60 hours PTO a year - 45 hours between November and March only and 15 hours January through December, $500 a year towards LSC trips, one free certification to use or give away a year, and airfare, registration, and accommodations to attend DEMA every other year.

Learn Scuba has for the past year and half to two years had only 1 manager who ended up moving for a new opportunity. They are still apart of the organization only now they assist remotely as one of the Store Liaisons. It was and has been the intention of LSC to have two managers and we have in the past had two. We have had a handful of part-time associates who also rotate through the role from time to time.

Does the job include free trips to Rainbow Reef Divers?
