Hello All! I am new to this community (both ScubaBoard and Scuba Diving) and am looking for advice on destinations for a last minute dive trip my boyfriend and I will be taking at the end of Feb/ beginning of March. We have our sights set out on Cozumel. However, now that we were just able to finalize our time off work, school, etc. we'd have to pay high prices for our passports, which will cut into vacation budgets. We can go to USVI for a little bit cheaper airfare and no passports. But I understand it's more expensive to vacation there. Do y'all think it's worth the extra costs to go to Cozumel or, will USVI be a good place to go diving as well?

This will be my first dive trip and first ocean dives so I'm sure I'll be impressed with the diving either way. This will be my boyfriend's second. While we will do other activites while not diving, he wants to make sure the diving will be worth the trip. Thanks!

I haven't dived in the USVI, but I've dived in the BVI, and I thought it was great fun. The corals were beautiful, and we saw quite an entertaining variety of reef fish. For your first ocean diving trip, I'm quite sure you'll enjoy what you see.

The USVI's/BVI's tend to be shallower, easier diving. A lot of Cozumel is deeper drift diving, maybe not the best choice for your first ocean dive trip. Of course you'll need a passport to go over the to BVI's also. One option might be to commit to the USVI's and send for your passports via the standard process - if they arrive in time - you can go over to the BVI's on the fast ferries also - it would be fairly easy to coordinate a day trip over there - some days it would even be possible to schedule afternoon boat dives and still get back. Or spend a few days on Tortola, the ferry ride is 50mins. It's easily possible (and cheaper) to book an afternoon return flight from St. Thomas also - some friends were able to get back from Virgin Gorda with time left over to look around/have lunch downtown before their 2PM flight.

Some of the better diving we did was in the BVI's a few years ago - not as many dive operators so there's less pressure on the reefs. Most times we saw sharks, turtles etc. they were pretty indifferent. And it's really stunning topside, beautiful beaches, lots of small islands to explore, there's a lot of day sail options there - most things move between the islands by boat - the ferry schedule will give you some idea of what's possible. Virgin Islands Ferry Schedule

Or look at St. Croix. It's the U.S., there's excellent shore diving both off the Frederickstad Pier and Cane Bay wall on the north side. There's also boat trips out to Buck Island National Marine Park from there. From DFW I'm fairly sure there's still a 1-stop AA flight thru MIA.

St. Thomas has a couple of shore dives but mostly it's more expensive boat diving there. Either place expect to pay more for accommodations since it's high season now. If you do go to St. Thomas, you might stay in the East End - you can dive both Sapphire Beach and Coki Beach from shore. Sapphire Beach is really shallow though, Coki Beach is where the cruise ship divers go. It's decent reef diving not much over about 60-80' IIRC.

Both are easy shallow dives and have on-site operators. There's quite a few condo options nearby, if you want to save and cook a little. It is a lot quieter than downtown though. To do some easy wreck diving, look at Admiralty or Blue Island from Charlotte Amalie. We used Dive In at Sapphire Beach once, they were reasonable, have a smaller boat, four of us were their business one morning. I don't think they could take more than eight. We did a shallower drift dive and a second dive off the cays nearby. One of the best dives, Carval Rock, is off St. John but accessible from the East End shops (Red Hook Diving, there's others). It's only divable when conditions are good.

There's also a car ferry between St. Thomas and St. John - runs on the 1/2 hr. So you could day trip and shore dive there also - there's a few more shore dive options there. And a lot of good snorkeling.

On the flipside, Coz can be fairly cheap accommodations. But factor in the cost of all the boat dives and it may not be a deal after you pay to expedite your passports. Villa Blanca resort might be a less expensive option, there's 3 dive operators nearby and they do meal plans. About 2 miles to town from there afaik. There's a shallow shore dive off their property but it's not the best on Coz.

Go to Cozumel. Every place in the Caribbean is more expensive, once you add all the "extras" in... food, transportation, diving. Cozumel is by far the least expensive, more bang for your buck, and also excellent diving.

I'm not one of the Cozumel regulars, so one or more of them should chime in here. Perhaps you'd save even more by doing the last minute fight to Cancun and then the bag drag on the ferry to Coz. Now having said all that, for newer divers I don't generally recommend Coz. If you can catch a good airfare, try Roatan. Once you get to the island it can be done very inexpensively and you will quite enjoy the diving too.

Whatever you decide don't stop the passport process. Everyone should have a current passport, IMNSHO.

if you don't have your passports yet I'd also consider Puerto Rico. its been awhile since I personally dove there but its was great diving and I think the island also has a lot to offer. La Parguera was where I went a long time ago, it was great then and I am sure its great now. Always wanted to go back. Have dove BVI but never our Virgin Islands :-). Also they are two great smaller islands off of Puerto Rico
[h=2]Culebra and Vieques. Haven't been but know people that have and it sounded great.[/h]

I am booking a trip tonight 7 nights all inclusive with air for 2 about 2400.00
going anyway cause I want to dive

Are you set on the Caribbean? If not consider the Florida Keys. No passport needed. Great dives, often 30 to 60 feet range. And can be done on a budget.

Thanks all for the input. With the cost of the passports and most likely having to go get it done in Dallas at the passport office, somewhere that doesn't require one is looking more promising. I'm definitely going to look into Puerto Rico and Florida Keys. Actually, the BF did his first trip at the Keys a few months ago and he enjoyed it.

Reading previous threads and what a few have mentioned here, it might be better anyways that we wait to go to Cozumel until I, at least, get more dives under my belt. I haven't been since my checkout dives at a cold, rainy and murky Possum Kingdom lake in October (wherever we plan to dive, we will be getting a refresher and possibly a personal DM). On top of the icky weather, the Dive shop owner was extremely rude, pushy, and had a temper. It almost made me rethink ever wanting to go diving.

Wishing the very best experience and overall enjoyment wherever you two find yourselves. Keep us posted on how it goes.
