Lake Simcoe - June 12-2005

My buddy and I were thinking of diving Lake Simcoe this Sunday. We're both newly certified OW divers with our own gear.

Would someone mind posting a brief description of Big Bay Point and what there is to see and instructions on where to enter, which way to go, etc?

We were hoping to dive either Big Bay point or the Morrison this weekend - I'm pretty clear on the Morrison (find the stump in Centennial Park and enter there, find the line close to shore and follow out).

Anyone planning on being in the area, or would anyone like to join us?

We were thinking sometime early afternoon, like 12 or 1pm.

To get BBP take 400 up to the Molson Park Drive exit and go East. Keep taking Molson Park Drive until you reach 25th side road (it's a bit of a drive until you hit 25th sideroad) where you'll turn left - you won't miss it because it's a four way intersection with a stop sign on Molson Park Drive (the name changes to something else along the way but I can't remember what it changes to). Then you follow 25th up for a bit and as you pass a store on your right side you'll see 30th sideroad on your left, turn left there and that's Big Bay Point.

I might be up there this weekend too, what time are you planning on diving?

We were pondering going around noon or 1pm.

I actually meant instructions on where to enter the water, and which direction to go from there. and if there is a line or anything. Is there anything to see underwater at Big Bay Point? I heard that the boat traffic can be harrowing.

as stated above nut there is a golf course on the left, north side, after you pass the golf course turn at your first left. follow that to BBP jetty. Go out to the end of the jetty. at the end of the jetty you will find water. Giant stride into the water. Once in the water you will find the north east point of the jetty. Descend 10 fett below the surface to the bottom. Once on the bottom you will see a line going north. Follow that line for 100-150 in 10 feet of water. You will see a drop off, well more of a gentle slope. Follow the gentle slope. The main line goes to about 95 feet. It takes 10 to 15 minutes to get to the end. Along the way you will see other lines that transect the main line, They stay shallow. There isn't much to see but it is a good place to plactice skills. There should be a lot of people up there early in the morning as there is an openwater class this weekend. have fun, don't get hit by any boaters.

Actually, we had decided to dive the Morrison, so should be plenty to see

With the warm weather we have been having as of late and the flooding I wouldn't be suprised to see the bacteria count pretty high. If you do dive the Morrison this weekend, be sure to use ear drops after the dive such as buro-sol to help eliminate any chance of ear infection.

We decided to go down to Sherkston instead. Water was really warm, vis wasnt too bad and was a good day of diving for the 3 of us.
