Capernwray quarry is the only site I know of near there myself but I have heard of people diving some of the lakes.

Have you tried one of the local clubs?

Ullswater is diveable from Glenridding - from vague memory it's pebbly to about 7m, then rotting vegetation, I think there was a bit more of a wall by the bridge, it drops off to about 30m or so - don't expext to see anything. Crummock water admittedly in February had no fish and a few algal growths. Wastwater is very deep, dived primarily for depth training, there used to be a gnome garden in about 50m or so, and some memoral plaques on some rock pinnacles - drops to about70-80m
From Morecambe you'd be much better heading for Oban or North, perhaps St Abbs or Anglesey

i've never dived the northern quarries & lakes, but from what i'm told there is a lot of peat in the water which makes the visibility iffy even on a good day.

I agree that from Morecambe southern Scotland, northern Wales are good places to go, but don't forget the east coast, (how far are you from the Farnes?) remember we fought a war in that water there are plenty of wrecks, or of you can cope with the long (exorbitantly priced) ferry crossing the Isle of Man is superb.

There are 3 sites around this area that I know of but not sure how far they are from you. Capernwray has already been mentioned which is a nice site with big friendly trout and some stuff to see. They should be sinking a huge aircraft there pretty soon and the gnome garden is a giggle if you can find it. There is also Stoney Cove but thats in Leicestershire so may be a bit far away but not dived there yet. Last one is blue lagoon but again is up near Hull and is only 11m deep so may not be for the experianced. All 3 have web sites if you want to have a look. Hope this helps :)

Stoney cove, i have dived, but only for training & i intend to keep it that way.

You have to get there VERY early in the morning (i'm talking 5am here, some people go up the night before & sleep in their cars) to get into the queue to get onto the bottom car park. The top car park is quite a long walk especially with heavy kit and a shortage of trolleys.

if you stand on the shore you can see it bubbling like a cauldron with the number of divers there.

it's quite well organised as a facility, if you go on a regular basis and get to know the system then i think it's fine, but there are only so many times you can see half a fuselage without falling asleep.

Stoney is in Leicestershire, hardly round the corner from Morecambe - there are a lot of good sea sites much closer than it - quarries have their place I guess, but I'd not bother driving any distance to one
