I've got a liveaboard booked at the end of Oct out of Labuan Bajo. We'll be bringing personal masks, but that's it.

The boat rates to rent gear onboard are pretty steep, and wondering if there's a recommended shop in town that you can rent from locally for less cost for a 6-day trip. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

What is the reason for not bringing your own gear for a LoB in a foreign country?

You might not find anyone other than your boat that is willing to rent to you. I recently tried to rent a wetsuit in town and wound up at every dive shop in LBJ. Not a single shop was willing to rent a suit even though there were plenty available. Seems shops have a policy of only renting gear to clients if they are diving with that particular outfit. I could be wrong and you may have a different experience but I would recommend bringing your gear if at all possible.

And welcome to Scubaboard.

Another thing to think about. Anything goes wrong with that rental gear, you probably wont get much help from the boat crew and may have to rent their gear on top of your rental.
