I'm close to ready to buy my first BC and regulator. My top choices are a Knighthawk and Atomic Z2. The dive shop sells all their Knighthawks with Air2s built in.

I forgot to ask them the following: can I get a Knighthawk without an Air2? If so, can I get an Atomic SS1 on it instead?

On a related note, boy, is this a tough choice! There are way too many posts on this forum about what BC and regulator to buy!

It's a personal choice, crispix... Whatever fits, and works for you... However, the integrated inflator/octo opens up a can of worms around here...

I did the same as you, however, with a Zeagle BC... I put an Atomic SS1 on it... Very happy with it (both the Zeagle, and the SS1) -- easy buttons, reliable, and breathes almost as well as my B2 primary...

Yes, the Knighthawk/SS1 is doable...this was my first set-up and still dive this in tropical waters.

The Knighthawk is a fine BC and the SS1 is probably the best integrated inflator regulater available. Mine breaths almost as good as my B2.

If I knew I was heading into some itsy bitsy teenie weenie passage in a cave or a wreck I'd want something designed for that situation but I'm not so the combination is great, compact and convienient. The SS1 comes with fittings for different sizes of corrugated hoses. There was a fitting for my Zeagle Stiletto and one for my Transpac. I can quickly switch it to the BC that I decide to use that day.

A few people here (the DIR folks for example) say you should offer a diver who is OOA your primary and then you use your secondary. With the SS1 that is exactly what you would do.

That's the same setup I have. Atomic regs are awesome. I have the Atomic titanium SSI and it breathes as good as my B1.

I got the red and my wife wife got the yellow - no difference in performance. ;)

The BC ships from the factory with either an Air-2 or an inflator. You could buy it with the inflator, which is cheap, then install the SS1. If the shop is nice, they would just swap the inflator for the SS1 and sell the inflator to someone who needs one. If not, you can eBay it, or just toss it in your spare parts pile.

Which BC you buy is really a personal choice. As long as it holds air and securely holds your tank, everything else is personal choice.

FWIW, the Knighthawk is a back-inflate. If you might have a need to spend a considerable amount of time on the surface, you might want to consider the Classic+, where the bladder extends to the front. It's much easier to lean back and float on the surface with the Classic+ than the Knighthawk.

Underwater, the Knighthawk is less restrictive when inflated than the Classic+, however the other side of the coin is that if you're properly weighted, your BC won't be inflated and the open front won't make any difference at all (unless you're a really big person).

Ideally, the dealer would let you try them both in the pool and see which you like better.

I have both the atomic Z2 and the ScubaPro knighthawk air intigrated. and it is every comfortable to dive with. the Z2 is a nice reg. and breaths really nicely even at deap depths but i'm looking to get a higher end atomic. dont know much about the ss1 but its atomic so you cant go wrong with that.
