Specifically the 400-meter test. Now, I swim 1600 meters three days a week, but I don't usually time myself...seems like 8 laps up and back in ten minutes is gonna be tough. Anyone have tales to tell?

It is easily done in the time, the scores for the times that PADI give are easily attainable

Do not worry

I agree with Steve. I'm in reasonable, but not fabulous shape by any stretch of the imagination and got a 4. If you swim regularly, you'll do just fine.

I think it's the 20 pullups with a tank on your back that gives most people trouble. What a shame they added that new skill for 2006.

Al,

You missread the news release - its 20 pushups with doubles on your back.

My apologies, I hate putting out bad information. It was just 10 pullups. Sheesh, I could have started a false rumor here.

Glad I got my ticket already. It'd be tough on an old fart like me these days.

hmmmm....makes one wonder. if you're trippin' on a swim test, how are you going to react in a REAL situation where your advanced diving skills, level-headed thinking and rescue training are needed?

tib one can be a good swimner and solid with rescue skills without swiming fast don't you agree?

Recently I certified an open water student that is on the highschool swim team. On his 6th pool session I told him everything had to be done sloooooow or I wasnt going to allow him to go to checkouts. He loved to do everything fast, I guess that's what swim team kids do after all. He got the idea but on his first checkout dive guess what, he's darting around again and I gave him his final warning. The next 3 dives were fine.

Just stick with the advice in the saying (slightly modified) that a superior Divemaster is one who uses his superior knowledge to stay out of situations that require his superior skills.

The swim test will be the least of your concerns - really the pace you can do in your sleep. Wait till you do the gear exchange underwater with a stranger as a buddy who's skills and confidence and coordination is nothing like your own. There is nothing like the feeling of having your own score in the hands of someone else - to really cause you to face the issues of being a "buddy" and part of a "team".
