Took the m/c on the 300 mile ride to Key Largo for a few days of snorkeling last week. Weather was mostly sunny with a breeze. This caused some waves and chop and probably shortened the visibility a bit. The benefit of going in late April was that neither accommodations nor the boats and reefs were crowded. Over all, I had a great time and especially a lot of fun snorkeling. First day went on a State Park boat. Very first class and all but, basically, I must remember never to again go out of my way to place myself under the authority of Park personnel. The idea was that if one got too far from the boat, he could be required to get out of the water. Of course, I wanted to get as far away as I could without getting arrested (that's just the type I am), so I frequently was concerned that I might be "crossing the line" though who knows where the line was? Anyway, it was still a lot of fun. The next afternoon I went out on the Reef Roamer catamaran. What a contrast! For one thing the crew, in addition to the captain, consisted of a very good looking young lady in her bathing suit. She was also strong and competent, as demonstrated when she raised the big main sail. In this case, the captain pointed way off the port bow and said the snorkeling was actually best over in that area. And it was! It was so beautiful, with lots of fishes both big and small. I don't think anybody else came over while I was there, so I had it all to myself, so far as I knew. The reef was quite a long way from town so we had a long ride back with the engine off and the sail up. There was only about 15 passengers and beer for sale if anyone wanted it, good music playing, so it was all just the way it's supposed to be. Met a group of two couples all of whom, I think, were medical doctors from Kentucky. What a delight it all was. And Key Largo is a place where it is very easy to feel welcome and at home. Also, I don't think I've ever been anywhere else where snorkeling itself, at least as much as diving, was the main thing on offer. It's like snorkeling and snorkelers get some respect here. Imagine that!
