aperture wide open: less depth of field
aperture closed down: more depth of field
wide angle lens: more depth of field
tele lens: less depth of field
focused close: less depth of field
focused for distance: more depth of field
aperture affects flash exposure and ambient exposure
shutter speed affects ambient exposure only
these are the types of rules you need to know.

Don't bog youself down with hyperfocal numbers,etc...
you don't need them.

Photography is light and composition, shaped and enhanced by your own ideas and experience, not a bunch of math formulas.
