You can't tell from the article if he was scuba diving, free diving, or just snorkeling...

59-year-old diver found dead at Kamilo Beach on the Big Island
KA'U, Hawai'i - A 59-year-old male died from an apparent drowning at Kamilo Beach on Thursday evening.

The man had been diving with a group but lost contact with the others.

He was found in a tide pool and brought to shore prior to the Hawai'i County Fire Department (HFD) arriving on scene.

According to HFD documents, the man was lying "supine on beach, obvious DOA."

The man was assessed and the scene was later turned over to Hawai'i Police Department.

Sounded like night free diving ( which is common) but yeah they don’t make it clear in any account.
