I'm arranging a trip to Fiji for the summer and will be spending 2 weeks there. One week I will go to Tavenui and staying and diving with Aquatrek. For the next week I am debating between going to the main Island and diving the Bligh Waters with Kai Viti Divers or Kadavu (mantavi Resort). I am trying to keep this trip affordable so I suppose an aquatrek/Mantavi combo would be most cost effective, however, does the diving at Kadavu compare with that of the Bligh Waters? Is it a "pick em?" Are both equally good in their own way? Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Thanks.

Before I can help you with info on Kadavu I just need to clarify which resort you are talking about. There are two resorts on Kadavu which have similar names. Matava resort is on the south side of Kadavu and Matana Resort (now call themselves Dive Kadavu mostly) is on the north side of the island, fairly close to the airport. I have dived at both resorts, most recently at Dive Kadavu a few months ago. I suspect you may mean Matava - let me know which and I will give you some further info.

Kadavu is probably the most traditional of the Fiji islands. Matava is on the southern side of Kadavu about 1 hour or so boat ride from the airport. It is isolated and secluded. The bures are fairly traditional thatched huts that blend in very well with the rainforest setting. I much prefer this style of accomodation to the big touristy resorts found on the Coral Coast for example. Now, my information on Matava is not completely up to date since it is now 9 years since i stayed there (although I was on Kadavu in June of this year). When we stayed there the resort was relativley new and they were still exploring the local dive sites. They certainly had some good dives on offer, and i suspect they may have found more sites since I was there. It is a bit hard to remember back nine years to compare the quality of the diving with that which I have done more recently in Fiji and Vanuatu, but certainly at the time I was very impressed with the dives. We saw sharks on several dives (white tips and grey whalers), and other large fish (eg barracuda, trevally, bumphead wrasse etc.). There were some great gorgonian fans - some of the biggest i have ever seen. I know on some of the dives we saw large numbers of soft corals, but possibly not as good as the soft coral we saw at Dive Kadavu recently - it is hard to remember accurately enough to make comparisons.

The water temp on Kadavu seems to be a little cooler than other regions of Fiji. Both my Kadavu visits have been in winter (June/July) and we were getting cool towards the end of dives despite full length 3mm suits. Towards summer the water temp will obviously be a good bit higher (but the summer months themselves carry the risk of cyclones). Unfortunately I can't provide a comparison with the Bligh Waters since I haven't dived there - but I have heard it is good diving. For an adventurous holiday in a remote setting Matava would be a good choice.

Hi: I actually like the diving on Kadavu better than the Bligh waters because there is less current. There is also a great location for Manta's on the Astolab Reef at Kadavu. I have a client who is diving the Bligh Waters this week with Kai Viti divers and emailed me today about the current in the Bligh waters......he said he was swept away once already and had to inflate a safety "sausage" to get rescued. If you don't mind current....then the diving there is really spectacular and both Kai Viti Divers and Wananavu Resort are really great. The Matava Resort on Kadavu is pretty basic......no power at night.....but the diving is great. My favorite resort on Kadavu is Papageno Resort and it is just slightly higher in price than Matava. It is on the other side of Kadavu, but they dive the Astrolab and they have the only wreck dive on Kadavu right in front of the property. The beach area and resort at Papageno are great!! I have some really good deals on Wananavu, Garden Island Resort, Matava and Papageno for the summer months.....especially 2 week packages because I use a pass fares for the inter-island flights. If you would like a quote or just more information send me an email: dolphinadentures2004@yahoo.com

Thanks!

Thank you for the responses. I emailed Matava and they have availability for the dates I want. I think I will opt for MAtava and Garden Island Resort . A two week trip is pricing out to be around $3300 including airfare from NYC. That's hard to beat from what I've seen.
