Wow, great read. I'm glad nobody was seriously injured.

If memory serves, this incident took place in the early '90's. I met Alex on a live aboard to Martir Island in the Sea of Cortez in 1989. Six months later, the live aboard we used (the Santa Barbara) sank in 1,000 feet of water at about 1 - 2 AM on New Year's morning leaving 2 survivors. Since I knew Alex dived from the Santa Barbara frequently (he's a marine biologist at the University of Arizona in Tucson - or was in 1989), I wondered if he'd been aboard at the time. Although we hadn't kept in touch, I'd liked Alex. He went out of his way to help my buddy & me deal with Mexican authorities when our passports turned up missing (a long story). When I read this story in Ocean Realm Magazine in the early 90's, I knew Alex was still around. For that reason, it was a happy story for me to read.

Thanks a lot. I shall never again be able to look at a plate of calamari without thinking about this.
