Myself, son and daughter are all finishing our certification next week.
We are all excited. I hope to take a Florida trip in 2011 so I am sure I will be asking many questions and looking for advice very soon.

Dan.

Funny you say that we are looking at heading there in the early new year.
I noticed that you are from NC. It seems like there is also many dives there.
A bit closer to home and within a day driving for us.

North Carolina would not be the best of locations to take your "first dive" trip to.

Very rough seas are normal year round.
The better dive locations can be two hours out on the boat - do the first dive - surface interval on a rocking boat - dive two and then two hours back to land. Bad news if the seas are gough.

Generally 50% of so days that time of year the seas will be too rough for the boat to even go out!

Florida would be a much better choice at this point in your dive career. Not to say you should never come to NC. You just need enough dives to understand the conditions and what to "really" expect.

Hello and welcome to the board. The Florida Keys have some great dives, although no shore dives. There are some other areas with good shore dives. I would suggest postingon Deep Dixie Divers as you get closer to your trip and you will get some great advice.

I agree with the others! My son and I did a few dives in Key Largo last year (we are newbies too) and it was amazing. The area we dove was so shallow and clear that it felt like we were diving in a giant aquarium; and there were so many wonderful critters to look at. We dove with Quiescence and found them to be very safety conscious; they only allow a maximum of 6 divers on a boat. I highly recommend them. Have fun.
