Just spent two great weeks diving Roatan out of Reef House Resort. Reef House dives sites on the East End of the island that others don't go to, so the reefs out that way are in great shape; hard and soft corals abound!
The "political turmoil" was not noticed at all. Pretty much a non issue on the island. Planes still coming and going, cruise ships still coming and going. As for the later; out at Reef House we did not have to deal with the crowds from the ships at all, way to far east for them. We saw them one morning a week well out to sea heading for Coxen Hole as we were eating breakfast and that was the extent of that.
One day we went out to the area around French Harbour for our dives and the difference
was significant. Reef was showing the signs of too many people diving there. Mary's Place was not nearly as nice as the last time we were there (6 years ago). Getting back out to the east side was welcome.
Vis was never great anywhere. Rain at night causing runoff was probably to blame for that, but vis was still was mostly in the "good" range.
Will be posting some photos on my Scubaboard photo page soon, check them out.
