I was thrilled to meet John Chatterton at the Beneath the Sea Exposition today. I told him, man, you're the real deal John. He blushed. Thanks, he said. You've done so much for the sport of diving, I said. Thanks, he said. Kohler was right next to him so I said, you too. Kohler said, yeah, yeah, I'm glad you said that, and smiled. Yeah, John said. He'd be hard to deal with if you didn't say that. They were both gracious and nice. It was a pleasure to meet them. That was worth the price of admission for me :) cool!

Oh, met two divers from this board too, Scubadobadoo and his wife. That was fun also.

Were Chatterton and Kohler there for a speaking engagement? I bet they have some real interesting stories.

Not sure about that. They were at a both and John was signing copies of the Book, Shadow Divers for a few people, wish I had mine with me, and just talking to people.Chatterton had a great, firm handshake. It really was cool to meet him. He is some kick butt diver.

From what of I've seen of them on Deep Sea Detectives, they seem real approachable. In my opinion, they are good for the sport and industry.

As far as diving goes, there are those two guys and everyone else, especially Chatterton. Yes, very approachable and unaffected.

I met them at an adventure travel expo in Feb in NYC. They were signing books. I spoke with them for about a half an hour - because the expo wasn't specific to diving there wasn't a huge crowd around them. They were the nicest, down-to-earth guys you'll ever meet. They signed a book for my friend and she was thrilled. I was very impressed with them. They spoke a little about the movie deal, etc. but they don't seem affected by it at all. Terrific guys.

Heh, reminds me of a story of a friend of mine. He sat next to Roy Scheider on a plane. Spent most of the flight doing the "Is this Roy Scheider?" thing. Finally he got up the nerve to ask. When he found out all he could think to say is "Were gonna need a bigger boat" (there was some turbulence at the time).

As he was leaving Roy asked why he hadn't asked for an autograph. My friend said I figgured you get harrassed enough and I didn't want to bother you. At that point Roy handed him his ticket stub...

You are one lucky devil If I didn't live abroad in Europe I would have went to BTS.
While I have not met either Chatterton or Kohler, I wrote Kohler on the "DECO STOP" and told him how much that book and their story meant to me and while I am not a crazy deep wreck diver reading that book put me there. About 3 weeks later I got an email from Richie telling me thank you and maybe someday we would be going out to a wreck someday, it was very nice. You can kinda tell those guys are down to earth.

Those guys rule!!!!

Great Story...GOOD FOR YOU!!!!

Thanks. Yeah, it was a highlight for me. It certainly made my day. I wish I could have lingered and talk to him more but I didn't want to hog his time. Other divers were waiting politely, and eagerly, in line to meet him. I never knew he was going to be there so it was a totally pleasant surprise. Everything else after that was ho hum. I mean, who wants to go look at mask straps after chatting with Chatterton?

Why didn't I say, would you like to dive some time? Where are you going to dive next John, so I can carry your tanks for you, defog your mask, or help you with your fins ? :) Can you imagine diving with this guy?

That is awesome, I wrote Chatterton a letter from over here in the beach with no water and hope to hear back from within the next few weeks. I'm pretty much the only person in my family who isn't scuba certified (I hope to receive my certification on my two weeks of leave in the middle of this tour in Iraq). After reading Shadow Divers over here I am more motivated than ever to pursue scuba diving. It is incredible that someone with such drive and determination as he has stays grounded and approachable. I hope that letter is the start of a good friendship between a current soldier and a former one.
