Hi folks. Any thoughts on the JBL Magnum Custom (31") for freshwater lakes (e.g. Arkansas)? I would mostly be looking for catfish, rough fish, gar, stripers. Or would the 38 special (42") be better? Visibility can be very poor at times (<10 ft). Any input would be appreciated. This would be primarily for casual hunting probably several times a year.

Hi ncaswell, I think we can only hunt carp and rough fish. So If your going for 30lb carp your going to need a different gun than if your going for pan fish. For pan fish, I like a pole spear with a paralizer tip.
I have tryed to cook wild carp several ways and I still can't enjoy them; so I don't shoot them.
If JBL mfr made a commerical it would say " they work" but that's it. some of their lesser modle's have week parts. JBL even addresses this issue by saying mag or XHD meaning they beefed up the parts to not be so crapy. But still you get a lot for your money. I mean when you bend your first spear that's 50$ This is not a cheep hoby.
Have you looked at the new woody 38 special? people are saying good things.
My next gun is comming from Phil Herranen, He makes great guns and unlike JBL if you don't like it you can sell it and get your money back.

I was diving with the (JBL) owners son just a few weeks ago. OASN He was a great shot 3 for 3!
He had a very nice rail style gun witn him, most likely all top end parts.
My point, If you buy a good gun the first time you may not need to sell it. You may have a quiver of guns and spears for different game but a good gun is a good gun!
See you topside! John
